Amy, with a background in Design, is one of our nine established shop dealers. When she inherited her grandmother's vintage jewelry years ago, she pondered over what to do with all the colorful vintage beaded necklaces and pendants. Having an artistic nature, she created her first bracelet from an old yet glamorous rhinestone belt buckle. After several praises and encouragement from family and friends, she began designing and repurposing other vintage jewelry pieces into one-of-a-kind bracelets and necklaces, many styled after original vintage designs. The front porch of Serendipity was magically transformed on Monday evening to host a demo and book signing with the fabulous UK artist/author ANNIE SLOAN. Guests had an opportunity to ask Annie questions about her CHALK PAINTS and WAXES before and after the event, and have their books personally signed. So. California stockist (distributor) for Annie's line of chalk paints and waxes, Anne (House of Anne) , was busy selling Annie's books and taking orders for the chalk paints/waxes. And she graciously held up Annie's portfolio of paint colors while Annie described her various painting techniques that can transform a boring piece of furniture into an "antique" treasure for your home decor. One of the dealers from Serendipity shared her hutch that she repainted using Annie's chalk paints/waxes. Everyone that attended left filled with inspiration and excitement!

Local Doll Artist Celebrates Raggedy Ann’s 95th Birthday

Author and illustrator Johnny Gruelle first introduced us to Raggedy Ann in 1915 and later in his series of books (1918). Raggedy Ann has charmed millions of children {and readers} with her always warm and optimistic outlook and calm approach to difficulties.

Well-known doll artist Connie Tognoli has been creating Raggedy Ann dolls since 1966. Connie created 20 inch Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls from a 1963 McCall's pattern to match the décor of her first child's colorful nursery. She still has those first two Raggedy dolls, and has created hundreds more in various sizes over the years.

To celebrate the 95th birthday of Raggedy Ann, Connie will be displaying (and selling) many creations from her family of hand crafted Raggedy dolls at Serendipity Antiques in Old Town Temecula, CA. during the month of September.

Connie will be making a special appearance at Serendipity Antiques on September 18th from noon – 5pm. A free drawing will be held for a special Raggedy Ann doll. Come meet local doll artist Connie Tognoli and join us in celebrating Raggedy Ann’s 95th birthday!

An Inspirational Evening with Annette Tatum

The evening was perfect....a light breeze and setting sun in the garden at Serendipity Antiques. Refreshments were set out in anticipation of the guest's arrival.The evening was finally here...a book signing event featuring Annette Tatum, designer/creator of House Inc. and now the author of The Well-Dressed Home.

" Let fashion from your closet inspire your homes' interior design" was the advice from Annette this evening as we gathered around to hear her talk about her background and what inspired her to write this first book. With a background in design {her first creations were fashionable pajamas, she revealed} and an accomplished entrepreneur, writing a book was a new challenge that came with lots of adjustments, like the last minute change in the title of the book. While on an interior decorating assignment, she suggested to the client that they open her wardrobe closet to view fashion choices. What she found was client's fashion choices inspired their home décor. To demonstrate two of the eleven decorating styles highlighted in her book, Annette brought along two "dressed" mannequins. She suggested using a mannequin to help discover your decorating style ~ let it become your decorating inspiration. Before signing her book for the crowd of admirers, she took questions. It was an enchanting evening and everyone left a few hours later, books tucked in their arms and heads filled with new ideas and lots of inspiration!

The gazebo in Jasmine's Garden at Serendipity Antiques was the perfect setting to showcase Cindy Ellis Art on Saturday. The weather cooperated; the garden was in full bloom {including a few bird nests nestled among the ferns and topiary's} and friends came from far {Sandra of My Lu Lu Belles, located in New Jersey} and near to browse and shop. Enchanting birdhouses, hand painted architectural pieces, porcelain hearts, soap dispensers, mirrors and sweet little urns painted with roses, charming garden statues.Thank you, Cindy & Bob, for a delightful, romantic day! So many lovely hand painted creations from a very talented woman! We hope to continue offering some of Cindy's art pieces within Serendipity Antiques soon. Purple Haze Lavender ~ Calming, Refreshing, Uplifting

Lavender is cultivated all over the world: Bulgaria, England, United States and France are historically known for producing the essential oil. Harvesting the lavender for oil must be done at the peak of the day's heat. Essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the fresh flowering tops. Lavender is considered the premier of all perfume. In a field ripe for harvest the plants resemble fattened velveteen porcupines with hues ranging from brilliant whites to shadings of violet and purple. Lavender's aroma imprint is camphoric sweet and rich ~ with an herbaceous, floral heart and a soft balsamic-wood undertone. Its odor at evaporation is generally a low, middle note. Its effect is calming, refreshing, uplifting, expansive, soothing, purifying. At Serendipity Antiques you'll find a wide selection of fresh organic lavender products, cultivated at Purple Haze Lavender Farm, located in the Dungeness Valley of Washington States Olympic Peninsula.

Topiary 101 ~ Special Event ~ May 8th ~ RSVP

Serendipity Antiques is delighted to host Topiary 101 on Saturday, May 8th, from 1pm - 2pm and from 3pm - 4pm.

Jasmine's Garden Treasures, located on the large back patio of Serendipity Antiques, is filled with custom-made whimsical wire topiary frames planted with various greenery. During the garden event, the landscape artists/owners of Jasimine's Garden Treasures will demonstrate how to plant, maintain, trim and embellish topiaries. Light refreshments will be served in the garden, while you browse the large selection of custom-made topiaries available for your patio/porch.

And...there will be a topiary GIVEAWAY to a lucky attendee!

Please plan to park in the new City Parking Garage located off Merced and 2nd Street. It's only a short stroll over to Serendipity Antiques on Main Street.

Vintage Porcelain Half Dolls from Germany

They are called by many names... “pincushion dolls”, “dresser dolls”, and “pin-head or whiskbroom dolls"....but the most common name is "half doll." Most of these finely sculptured porcelain figurines were made in Germany, France, Bavaria, and

Japan

. Some of the most beautiful porcelain half dolls were made by Dressel & Kister in Passau, Germany. Artists used portraits of their subjects, and also based many of the dolls on legendary characters from the theater. The dolls showed the great skills of the doll maker, with delicately sculptured hands, arms and tiny waists. Some dolls were designed with arms that were held away from the body, or with one hand on the hip or touching their hair. Dolls were elegant, with elaborate hairstyles and ornate clothes. The dolls were designed to be attached at the waist or lower waist to voluminous skirts; many were attached to pin cushions. This explains the tiny holes at the base. Some were attached to a wire lamp shade that became the doll's skirt. Half dolls became very popular in the early 1900-1930s and were considered an extravagance. Marks, if any, will be on the tapered base of the doll or inside the small opening on the lower unglazed section. Look for numbers and country of origin. Those made in Germany are the most prized. Half dolls of fine quality are wonderful to display; collected and treasured for each new generation.

Vintage Lace ~ Poems of an Abandoned Art

In the novel "I No Longer Like Chocolates" a young woman named Maria Lurdes (nicknamed Milu) immigrates from Europe to the prosperity of California. One passage in the book describes Milu's new life in California, "She would arise at dawn and, seated cross-legged, set to work: the mechanical motions of her arms and hands, the needle between her fingers, in a rhythm that dazzled the eye. From her hands came forth embroidered poems, but at no great profit. It was necessary to embroider for many days just in order to earn enough to buy a meter of printed cotton percale to make an apron."

French Design Burlap Pillows

At Serendipity Antiques you'll find a wonderful selection of pillows created from burlap. Burlap pillows are seen in all the decorating magazines. They look lovely in any decor ~ country, French, traditional. Each pillow has a quality poly-fill insert that can be removed for cleaning. Black French design adorns one side of the pillow. Pillows measure 16 inches square or 18 inches square. Stop in and pick a few up before they're gone!

SERENDIPITY ANTIQUES is launching a blog, to keep you informed about all the happenings at Serendipity Antiques. We hope you'll stop in and visit with us often, as we highlight various antique treasures offered by our shop dealers. Our dealers are scouting far and near to bring you treasures from the past ~ early American and European antiques, collectibles, cottage chic furniture/accessories, vintage linens and lighting and vintage china/porcelain. Taylor Linens will be showcasing new quilt and pillow fabrics this Spring...you won't want to miss them! And as Spring nears, Jasmines Gardens will be filled with potted flowers and plants for your patio.
